The Wellcraft 2900 Sport Bridge was introduced in 1983 as a low-cost alternative to more expensive small flybridge fishboats from Bertram, Phoenix and Blackfin. Built on a medium-deadrise hull, a wide 10-foot, 8-inch beam gives the Sport Bridge plenty of cockpit room for fishing or relaxing in a couple of deck chairs. The interior is arranged with a V-berth forward, a compact galley and head compartment to port, and a convertible dinette to starboard--a very efficent layout that will suit the needs of weekend cruisers or a couple of overnight anglers. Engines are accessed via hatches in the raised cockpit sole, and bench seating on the flybridge will accomodate three. Standard features include rod holders, a teak bow pulpit, and a swim platform. |

| Sports Fisherman styling.The seat upholstery and side panels are near new white marine vinyl. Two Mercruiser 5.7 liter Vortec V8 gasoline, raw water cooled. Model: 350 CID, 260 HP each.
The interior arrangement is a forepeak rope locker followed by a bow cabin with a vee berth and a 19” square hatch. The galley is to port. The main electric panel is to starboard. The private head is to starboard. Up two steps to the cockpit. The cockpit deck is all flat without tripping hazards or steps. The helm is to starboard with easy to read gauges and a comfortable bench helm seat. There are two safety glass windshields with two wipers. Storage for life jackets is under the seat. To port is a back to back seat that folds flat as a sun lounge. A transom seat folds up and away.
Fishing Equipment: Lee Skiff outriggers, 4 rod holders in the gunwales, transom door to the platform, padded bolsters, fresh water wash down. |

A spacious, single-level cockpit, practical cabin accomodations, and a low price made the Wellcraft 2900 Express (called the 288 Suncruiser in 1981-82) a fairly popular model for Wellcraft in the 1980's. She rides on a solid fiberglass, modified-V hull with a relatively wide 10-foot, 8-inch beam. While sterndrives were available in the 2900, most were sold with straight inboards with the engines located under the forward cockpit sole. Inboards are great--they're certainly more dependable than sterndrives--but in order to have inboards in a midsize express, you have to give up the mid-cabin interior so common in most family cruisers. There are berths for four in the 2900 with a V-berth forward and a convertible dinette in the main cabin. A teak bow pulpit and swim platform were standard. |
